Studspacings should not exceed 600mm centres for 1200mmsheets and 450mm centres for 900mm sheets.The resistance values in the enclosed tables are stated foreither JD4 or JD5 joint strength timbers.It is essential for the bracing walls to be securely connectedto the roof and sub-floor systems. Wind forces acting onthe roof must be resisted and transferred to the ceilingdiaphragm and through the walls to the sub-floor. Themethods of connection are detailed in AS 1684.2:2021, andinclude nail fixings, galvanised iron straps, framing anchorsand bolts.Weather ExposureDuring normal weather conditions, Stagwood F22Hardwood Ply Brace may be exposed to the weather andsubjected to temporary wetting and drying. As the productis supplied in a moisture-conditioned state (seasoned), it isadvisable to enclose the building as soon as possible afterfixing the sheets. A maximum exposure period of threemonths is recommended.Stagwood F22 Hardwood Ply Brace is a wood panelproduct and therefore some dimensional movement mayoccur during extended periods of extremely high or lowrelative humidity, or moisture absorption or release.InstallationBefore installation of Stagwood F22 Hardwood Ply Brace,panels should be checked for:1. Any physical damage2. Correct panel thickness3. Correct panel grade and markingUplift force may require additional fixings at the end of thebracing panel in accordance with AS 1684.2:2021.Fix sheets with 2.8mm Ø x 30mm flat head galvanisedor corrosive resistant nail, the fastener head should NOTbe driven into the sheet. When stressing the frame underhigh loads, the modes of failure are typically nail pullthrough failure of the joint between the studs and plates orplate splitting. By staggering the nails, the latter failure isminimised since a common crack line is not induced in theplate.Simplified Bracing for Non-Cyclonic AreasBracing walls are set at right angles to the windward walls.In accordance with AS 1684.2:2021, they should be evenlydistributed throughout each storey of the building. Bracingshall initially be placed in external walls, and where possible,at the corners of the building. Where bracing cannot beplaced in external walls because of openings or similarsituations, a structural diaphragm ceiling may be used totransfer racking forces to bracing walls that can support theloads.Unless otherwise specified, sheet bracing walls shall be aminimum of 900mm in height. Clause 8.3.6.5 ofAS 1684.2:2021 gives limited exceptions to this, and theseexceptions are described as part of the capacity diagramswithin this Design Guide.Total bracing requirements for each ‘area of elevation’ of thewindward walls can be obtained from AS 1684.2:2021 Table8.2. Ensure that the minimum bracing unit requirements forthe external walls are satisfied. The additional bracing unitscan then be evenly distributed throughout the external andinternal walls.For the number of Stagwood F22 Hardwood Ply Bracesheets, divide the bracing unit requirements by the DesignCapacity per sheet width in this Design Guide. Where thebuilding elevation contains combinations of pitched roofs,gable or skillion ends, or upper or lower storeys, the ‘area ofelevation’ of each section should be calculated separatelyStagwood F22 to determine the total bracing unit requirements. Hardwood Ply Brace should be installedvertically with sheet ends fixed to the top and bottomplates. Support the vertical edges over studs. StagwoodF22 Hardwood Ply Brace like all wood-based products ishygroscopic, meaning the panel will adjust to the equilibriummoisture content of its environment. To allow for smalldimensional movement of the Stagwood F22 HardwoodPly Brace panel, allow a 2mm gap between sheets and raisethe sheets 2mm from the floor.F22 HARDWOOD PLY BRACE DESIGN GUIDE V1 – 07/2023STUDBRICKSWALLCAVITYWALLTIEWall cavities should be kept clear of obstructions and thewall ties sloped downwards, away from the frame andbracing.When constructing boxed eaves, the inner ends of soffitbearers or sprockets should not penetrate through thestructural sheet bracing. Hangers suspended from the topwall plate or rafters may support the ends.3Brick Veneer ConstructionStagwood F22 Hardwood Ply Brace is ideal for use ascavity bracing in brick veneer stud construction. Brick wallties must be the face-fixed type and comply with AS 2699- Wall Ties for Masonry Construction. The ties should benailed through the Stagwood F22 Hardwood Ply Brace intothe narrow face of the studs.> Areas within 300mm of corners should be avoided.> Areas within 200mm of top and bottom plates shouldbe avoided.> Areas within 100mm of vertical studs or noggingsshould be avoided.> Penetrations of up to, but not exceeding 100mmdiameter should be limited to one hole per sheet.> Holes should always be neatly cut and the cornersrounded.> For a larger penetration of up to 400mm maximum, ormultiple smaller penetrations, frame around the area tobe penetrated with framing members and bracing to befixed as per the requirements for the top and bottomplate nailing pattern.Standard FastenersThe racking capacities of the systems in this Design Guideare based upon a 2.8mm Ø x 30mm flat head galvanisedor corrosive resistant nail as specified in AS 1684.2:2021. Ifpower driven gun nails are used, the user must ensure thenail holding capacity is at least the equivalent of the handdriven 2.8mm Ø x 30mm flat head galvanised or corrosiveresistant nail.Fastener edge distances along top and bottom plates andedge studs should be a minimum of 15mm and 7mm wherepanels are fixed to internal framing.The spacings for staples are two thirds (fastener spacingmultiplied by 0.66) of those shown for nails or screws.Sawing, Drilling and ShapingStagwood F22 Hardwood Ply Brace can be sawn andshaped like solid wood in any way with standard woodworking tools in a well-ventilated open area to avoidbreathing wood dust. If handheld equipment withoutsuction is used, a protective face mask should be worn.It is recommended that carbide tipped tools are used toprovide the neatest cut without damaging the edge of theStagwood F22 Hardwood Ply Brace panel.Conventional hand or power drilling tools are suitable forproviding penetrations as shown below.Penetrations through Stagwood F22 Hardwood Ply BracePanelsShould it be necessary to penetrate the Stagwood F22Hardwood Ply Brace for plumbing or electrical installationsthe following guidelines should be adhered to:Penetrations of up to, butnot exceeding 100mmdiameter are limited to onehole per sheetNo penetration to timberframingAreas within 300mm ofcorners should be avoidedAreas within 200mm oftop and bottom platesshould be avoidedAreas within 100mm ofvertical studs or noggingsshould be avoidedF22 HARDWOOD PLY BRACE DESIGN GUIDE V1 – 07/20234Fixing of Bottom PlatesThe lateral force effects due to wind and earthquakes areresisted by bracing walls resulting in two separate methodsof action on bracing elements. The first action is an in-planesliding force transferred to the bottom plate. Sufficientfixings of the bottom plate to the sub-floor/slab must bedesigned to resist this in-plane ‘shear’ force.The second action induces rotation or overturning effects.Tie rods extending from the top plate to the sub-floor andlocated at each end of the bracing wall provide excellentresistance. For bracing elements requiring lower resistance,nominal connection of the bottom plate to the sub-floor/slab can overcome these overturning forces. If the boltsare used in concrete slabs, they must be appropriatelyembedded. Bearer spacing is to be as per the table below.4. Product Description
Primarily used as bracing in domestic housing applications, plybrace is a rough-finished hardwood bracing plywood that complies with the AS/NZS 2269 structural standard using an ‘A’ bond glueline.

Plybrace panel is made from mixed hardwood species with the veneers carefully measured and tested for strength and stiffness. The D grade finish has a rough, unsanded appearance where limited imperfections are considered standard.

PLYWOOD BRACING

A product made especially for the structural bracing of houses. It is made with an ‘A’ bond glue line.
Plywood Bracing is suitable for use in wall and roof bracing applications.
Using bracing in timber framed buildings affords designers the opportunity to incorporate large openings and areas of glass in external walls or additional wall strength for cyclonic areas.
Made from mixed species hardwood sourced from legally harvested resources and an A Bond glueline to comply with AS2269.
Hardwood bracing plywood can be supplied in untreated and H2-S treated.
